Parish Priest:  Father Michael McGivney and American
Catholicism
- with co-author Douglas Brinkley
William Morrow Publishers, 2006
Nearly every day, in towns and cities across the world, groups of
Catholic laymen known as the Knights of Columbus gather
together. In the mid-19th century Father Michael J. McGivney
dedicated his life to the spiritual and physical welfare of others,
creating the K of C to provide insurance.

What I Liked About Writing It:  No one had ever written a
biography of Father McGivney before -- I  like writing about
otherwise obscure people and events.
Best Thing That Happened as a Result: A man at a book signing
told me that reading Parish Priest had meant a great deal to his
wife just before she died.  That has stayed with me ever since.
How to Make Me Mad: Ask me if I'm Catholic -- as if you could tell
something about the book by that fact

Race of the Century:  The Heroic True Store of the 1908
New York to Paris Automobile Race
Crown Publishers 2005
Capturing the determination and thrill of an era when technology
made anything seem possible, this work tells the story of the death-
defying New York-to-Paris Auto Race held in 1908. Photos.

What I Liked About Writing It: Covering for all of the teams equally
-- sometimes I get tired of the Olympics mentality and the idea that
the Americans are the only worthy contestants in any international
competition.
Best Thing That Happened as a Result: I met my friend Richard
Harfmann, who translated the German entrant's memoir for me.
How to Make Me Mad:  Confuse the New York-to-Paris Automobile
Race with fictional rally depicted in that inane movie ("The Great
Rac") of the 1960's.

Ether Day:  The Strange Tale of America’s Greatest Medical
Discovery and the Haunted Men who Made It

The story of how ether was discovered to quell the cries of agony
during surgery in the 19th century is linked tightly to three strong-
willed gentlemen. Fenster compellingly recounts the story of their
invention and their subsequent downfall.

What I Liked About Writing It: In the midst of the research, I
realized that the Ralph Waldo Emerson papers at Harvard
University contained a trove of letters regarding the discovery and
its aftermath.
Best Thing That Happened as a Result: Winning the Anesthesia
Foundation Award was an overwhelming honor.  By that, I mean
that when the president of the Foundation telephoned to tell me, I
got dizzy and had to lie down in the middle of the conversation.
